Injectables Q & A
What are injectable cosmetic treatments?
Injectable cosmetic treatments are serums and solutions that our licensed provider, Kimberly Mejia, RN, injects into your skin to improve its appearance.
The two most common forms of injectables are dermal fillers and diluted neurotoxins like Botox. Both dermal fillers and Botox reduce the appearance of wrinkles, fine lines, skin folds, and sagging loose skin.
How do injectable cosmetic treatments work?
Botox and dermal fillers work in slightly different ways.
Botox
Botox uses a diluted botulinum toxin solution to temporarily paralyze the small facial muscles that pull your skin into expressions and wrinkles. As your muscles relax, the skin covering them also releases, reducing the appearance of your wrinkles.
Botox has been FDA-approved for cosmetic uses since 2002, and millions of people worldwide have benefitted from Botox injections. You can usually notice the effects of Botox within 3-7 days, and they can last for several months, although touch-up appointments are necessary to maintain your smooth skin.
Dermal fillers
Dermal fillers work differently than Botox. They’re gels made of chemicals found naturally in your skin, including hyaluronic acid and collagen. When a filler is injected into your skin, the gel fills in and plumps your wrinkles. The FDA has approved several brands of dermal fillers as a way to plump lips, cheeks, and chins.
What should I expect while receiving injectables?
The process for receiving an injectable treatment is similar for both Botox and dermal fillers. Our Registered Nurse cleanses your face and marks the sites where the injections will have the best effect. If you have sensitive skin, he can provide a cold compress or topical numbing agent to ensure comfort.
Then, using a small needle, she makes the injections. A Botox appointment takes approximately 20 minutes, and dermal fillers take 30-60 minutes. When injecting dermal fillers, we stop to check the progress or gently massage the filler gel into place.
How should I take care of my skin after an injectable treatment?
You can return to your daily responsibilities after Botox or dermal filler injections, although we recommend avoiding physical activity for 24 hours after your appointment.
You should always protect your skin from the sun by wearing broad-spectrum sunscreen or a wide-brimmed hat while outdoors, as the sun’s UV rays cause skin damage that leads to signs of aging like wrinkles and sagging.
